Afro-Cuban Dance Class for Children

CCEMiami will host an Afro-Cuban dance class on Saturday, September 7th from 10:00am – 11:30am. Cuban dancer Yesenia Selier will conduct a dance workshop for families and children 5 and up. Participants will learn basic conga and rumba dance skills. The class, free of charge is possible through co-sponsorship with Museo Cubano. The conga dance is an Afro-Cuban line dance that emerged in the 1930’s. The conga line consists of a group of dancers who stand behind each other while holding on to the person’s waist. This dance involves three steps and a tap to the side which can be easily mastered. Bring your family and learn the Conga dance!
Rumba is a rhythmic dance that originated in Cuba in the 19th century and contains Spanish and African influences. Many elements of rumba are incorporated in contemporary dances such as hip hop. Participants will learn basic Rumba skills and will become comfortable enough to impress their friends!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cuban born performer and scholar, Yesenia Fernandez Selier holds an M.A. in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from NYU. Yesenia is an accomplished actress and dancer, and instructor of Cuban and Afro Cuban dance. She founded in 2011 The Ibiono Cultural Association, with Master Afro Cuban Drummer Roman Diaz, focused on the continuity of the Afro Cuban Legacy, in New York City.

In addition to this dance workshop and under sponsorship of the CubanMuseum, Yesenia Selier presents ORISHAS on Saturday, September 7th at 8:00 pm and Sunday, September 8th at 5:00 pm at the Koubek Center of Miami Dade College. For tickets and information call 305-529-5400.
