Some may see Blancanieves as Spain’s answer to The Artist – both are “neo-silent films” that re-imagine the genre for today’s audiences, and it swept this year’s Goyas, the Spanish Oscars, with ten awards. However, production on Blancanieves, which is Spanish for Snow White, was started first, and the film itself is a unique, flamenco-scored, bullfighting-filled movie that is warm and gothic, sincere and arch, all at the same time. Set in a romanticized 1920s Seville, and inspired by the classic Brothers Grimm fairy, Blancanieves begins its Exclusive Miami Premiere run Friday, April 12 at the Coral Gables Art Cinema in 35mm with Spanish inter-titles and English subtitles. Gables Cinema welcomes Blancanieves to South Florida at the Red Carpet Opening Night event on Friday, April 12, with screenings at 7:00 and 10:00 pm. Between the two screenings, a reception will take place from 9:00 to 10:00 pm on the outdoor plaza and inside the theater for anyone who purchases a ticket for either show. The reception includes great Spanish and Latin American food from La Taberna Giralda, Graziano’s and Xixon, and open bar courtesy of Bacardii. There will be a musical performance by local classical, jazz, and flamenco guitarist Carlos Abanto. The Village Voice says Blancanieves is, “Witty, riveting and drop dead gorgeous.” Tickets for regular screenings are $11.50 and under. Tickets for the Opening Night Party are $20 for general admission and $15 for members. They are available in advance through the Cinema’s website www.gablescinema.com and in person at the box office during regular screening hours. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the website for full screening times, film trailers and more. The Cinema is located at 260 Aragon Avenue, directly across from Books & Books, in downtown Coral Gables.
